Leo spent an hour hooking floating debris, expanding the plastic footprint of his floating home. It was peaceful, almost therapeutic, until he noticed the first anomaly. A wooden crate drifted toward him. When he pulled it aboard and opened it, it didn't contain palm leaves or scrap metal like the others. Instead, the game's chat box in the bottom corner of the screen flickered to life.

He looked back at the screen. The ocean around his raft was no longer empty. Dozens of dark, pixelated shapes were swimming just beneath the surface. They weren't sharks. They looked like low-polygon human models, reaching their digital hands up toward the bottom of his raft. He realized with a chill that his uncle hadn't been collecting old electronics as a hobby. He had been trying to build a digital lifeboat for something that was running out of space.

Inside was an executable file from 2016, a pre-release alpha build of a survival game. When he launched it, there was no main menu, no options, and no credits. The screen simply faded in from black to reveal a character standing on a four-by-four grid of wooden planks, floating in an endless, procedurally generated ocean under a setting sun. The only tool in his inventory was a plastic hook tied to a length of rope.
