The lyrics are a deep meditation on the temporary nature of life and human achievement. It draws inspiration from biblical passages in Ecclesiastes (referencing that everything man accomplishes is "like chasing the wind") and Genesis ("...for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return").

Livgren originally wrote the melody as a simple finger-picking exercise to warm up his fingers. His wife overheard it, called it beautiful, and encouraged him to turn it into a full song.
